Magic Sea Weed

iOS App, Logo Redesign

Role —

Design, UX

Client —

Self Initiated

Intro —

A self initiated project to redesign the surf forecasting iOS app and brand of Magicseaweed. The current app is feature heavy, and lacks the design finesse prevalent with other brands in their sector, resulting in an over complex and unexpectedly unpleasant user experience.

I redesigned user interactions, animations, user interface, addressing the user experience and producing an alternative Magicseaweed logo.

Detail —

The main view shows a simplified interface that when interacted with provides more detailed information on the upcoming forecasts for that week or selected days.

‘Search’ and ‘Add’ locations —

Similar to the iOS weather app, users can swipe through saved/favourited locations, as well as view them as a list. ‘Map’ view allows users to explore new areas and add new locations.

Logo redesign —

Small considered adjustments to bring the logo inline with the app UI.

Current logo —

The current ‘msw’ mark somewhat mimics the building and breaking of waves, but seems to lack any adjustment to the letterform resulting in the logo feeling wooden and lacking any sense of fluidity

Grid —

Some simple alterations were made to the MagicSeaWeed logo. The use of the wave metaphor had pontenial. I decided to set the letter forms on a diagonal grid, rounding the corners to emphasis fluidity, and applying the Apercu font to the Logo type.

New logo —

The solution is refined and recognisable with options for the mark to be used independently.
